The library has many useful cookbooks and resources! Use the Information Management System to help you create your menu.

Your menu must include the following: Please refer to the Menu Rubric!

Step 1:   Review with the students what they have learned in the computer lab about the need to eat healthy.   Discuss what type of food are fries and hamburgers from fast food restaurant.  Discuss what they learned about fast food.
Step 2:  Review the food pyramid.   Have the students label the foods at the bottom of the recipe sheet and the daily requirements.
Step 3:   Students will choose one meal to plan a menu.  Put the name of the meal at the top of the placemat.
The teacher  book talks some of the cookbooks.   Explain how they will use the cookbook in planning their menu to include one recipe from one cookbook they choose to use.
Step 4:  Model with the students on the menu placemat the graphic organizer they will use to create their healthy menu.  Under the placemat write:
Drink-
Main dish-
Side dish (es)-
Dessert-

Of course breakfast will be different.  Great time to discuss why breakfast is different!
At the bottom of the sheet write:  Cookbook: (to be reference) and page #.

Step 5:   Model for students how to create a menu for a meal.  Think out loud each part of the menu and model how to use a cook book and reference it at the bottom of the sheet.  Stress how to find and make healthy choices for the menu.
An illustration of the meal will be drawn and colored on the placemat.

Step 6:   Have students select a cook book and begin planning their meals.

Step 7:  Teacher checks meals to be healthy and may make suggestions to menu to help make the meal healthy.

Step 8:  Recipe

Step 9:  Draw and color the menu on the placemat.

Step 10:   Share the menu with your table.  YUM!!!!!
