HUMAN/ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION is the study of how human beings interact with their surroundings.  Throughout history, people have adapted to their surroundings by using the available resources 'carve out' their lifestyle. Native Americans are a perfect example of how they utilized their surrounding to establish who they were.  For every human act there can be a negative impact upon the environment, whether it's clear-cutting to put up a shopping mall, or perhaps the pollution that may come from a paper factory.  We need to  consider the impact environmental changes will have on a place and people who live there.

HUMAN/ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION also deals with how the environment effects the people who live there.  The environment of a region effects the lifestyles of the people who live there.

The two critical questions geographers ask when studying HUMAN/ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION are:

  • How do people affect the environment?
  • How does the environment affect people?

Farming can be beneficial to both consumers as producers, but if not managed correctly or monitored, the the run-off from pesticides or animal waste can impact the quality of the local water resource. This is an example of how people affect the environment.

Let's go back to the Swiss Alps. These mountains bring in a lot of tourism for the locals which enables them to provide many jobs for the towns people. This is an example of how the environment affects the people.
