Badger Facts

What does a badger look like?
Adult badgers measure 30 inches to 35 inches in length, including a short  furry tail. Their bodies are wide which makes them look flat.  Many adult badgers weigh 12 pounds to 16 pounds but right before winter, they store up fat and may weigh as much as 20 pounds or more.

They are mostly gray, with a grizzled look.  Their "underfur"  is either a light tan, or a creamy white.  A white stripe from the nose leads between the eyes and back over the head of the badger, ending between the shoulders.

Badgers are built stocky with short but very strong limbs and sharp clawed feet. The small head, short neck, long wedge shaped body, and a very short tail make badgers excellent diggers, able to move heavy material in confined spaces.

Badgers don't have the best eyesight. They are nocturnal and most of their time is spent underground in their setts. Though their eyesight is poor, their hearing and sense of smell is excellent!

HABITAT
Badgers like to make their dens (setts) where there is sandy or porous soils.  Badgers  like wooded areas when the ground is good for digging.  Mostly, they enjoy walking from place to place, they can trot or bound along at a gallop when they chose to.  Badgers are found
in all of the western and north central states and their range has gradually  grown eastward over the years. You won't find a badger in the Southwest or Southeast part of the United States.

What do they eat?

The American badger is the most carnivorous (meat-eater) of all badgers. It digs out chipmunks, ground hogs, ground squirrels, mice and rabbits. It will eat carrion (dead animals) and rattlesnakes  when available but the badgers do not eat the rattlesnake head.  Carrion is probably an important winter food when the frozen ground is difficult or impossible to dig in.

Behaviors: Badgers do not hibernate like bears during winter, but they do sleep for long periods of time in northern states.  If the weather is especially cold and snowy, you can be sure that the badger is cuddled up in his den sleeping!  Wintering dens can sometimes be found in the deep forest where the frost and snow doesn't get as deep.  They can stay underground for weeks at a time, but they come out to hunt occasionally as they do not store food.

Badger Fact:

Badgers are determined fighters when they are threatened.  They have loose fitting skin, which prevents them from being held securely by another animal.
