Palette is a part of Google's Arts and Culture app. It matches a color palette with artwork of your choice by asking you to either upload a picture, take a picture or have Google surprise you with their own choice. From your photo, Google finds artworks, sourced from 1,500 cultural institutions around the world, that contain similar colors. For instance, search the colors from this Google Logo(see below), and you’ll likely get "White cottages at Saintes-Maries" by Vincent van Gogh. Art Palette is a great complement to use with other educational and interactive features, such as Art Camera. This nifty tool allows you to closely examine famous art work VERY up close and personal. Viewers can examine the art in high-resolution, inch-by-inch detail. It's a lot of fun and amazing what detail you can pick up.
Art Camera
This highly advanced system was developed by the Google Cultural Institute. As noted in the official press release, “Many of the works of our greatest artists are fragile and sensitive to light and humidity. With the Art Camera, museums can share these priceless works with the global public while ensuring they're preserved for future generations.”
This is robotics on steroids! The camera (operated by sophisticated robot) captures the finest details making hundreds of high resolution close-ups by using high-frequency sound to measure distance and ensure accurate focus on each individual brush stroke. Once a work has been fully captured, the individual files are delivered to Google’s servers to be stitched together into a single image.
Art is searchable by collection, artist, medium, and date, as well as other terms.
