  • Mystery Animal
Picture
This activity will take 2-3 45 minute class times. It is intended to be done in cooperation with the Librarian, Technologist and classroom teacher.

Introduction:
When Nicki drops his white mitten in the snow, he goes on playing without realizing that he is wearing only one mitten.
As the lost mitten lies in the snow, some of our forest friend animals find the mitten and crawl in!  The first few animals who wiggle in are small, but not for long! Each animal to crawl in get larger and larger in size until finally, a big brown bear tries to squeeze in. Does he fit? Read and find out!

The Process:

After reading Jan Brett's The Mitten, the children will choose an animal, from the book that they would like to know more about. They will be given a booklet of information for each animal. Each student will use the handout to collect information and create a booklet about their animal.

The Task:
Students will use the computer to write, edit, revise, and insert a picture of their animal. They will need to include following information in their booklet

  • Description : What does your animal look like? Use good descriptive word like.large, tiny, furry, soft, prickly.
  • Where does your animal live? Forest, water, up a tree, desert
  • What does your animal eat? Don't just say, ''food''.
  • Name two (2) adaptations of your animal. For example: A duck has webbed feet to help it swim, a frog has his eyes on top of his head to see above the water while his body is under the water staying safe and cool.
  • One (1) interesting fact about your animal. For example: Did you know spiders smell through their feet?

 Pictures:
